Abstract

Euthanasia or Mercy killing is one of the most controversial and burning issues of present day. The first section of article is about the introduction, history and types of euthanasia. The second section is about the world current status of legislation about it. Third section is cardinal section of the article and describes about the legitimacy of euthanasia from Islamic perspectives. The views of proponents of euthanasia are analyzed in the light of Qur'an, Hadith and the views of Islamic Jurists. In this section Islamic concept of Sanctity of human life, suicide because of unbearable pain and quitting treatment is discussed. The rebuking penalties for the person who commits euthanasia is also discussed and the expected impacts of euthanasia are also discussed. In 4th section the decisions of Islamic consensual colleges of legislation are presented to bring forth the collective decisions of Islamic jurisprudence. Killing a person with his own permission, the legal status of "don't resuscitate" order, and the doctrine of double effect of medicines is also discussed. The 5th section is a brief retort of the proponents of the euthanasia and reveals the hidden realities relating to euthanasia. In last the summary and findings of the research are presented.
