Abstract

This manuscript communicates the analytical study of promotion and formulation of word Seerah. The literal meaning of Seerah in the light of famous Arabic and Urdu dictionaries, its contextual meaning with reference to Holy Quran and Hadith are discussed in detail. Initially, the term was used for battles of Islam led by Prophet (PBUH). Later on the term was extended from Jihad to various matters of Jihad such as reconciliation, peace, refuge, the rebels, apostates and trade law with non-Muslims. Jurists used this term for international law of Islam. In the due course of time the word Seerah covered all aspects of Prophet's (PBUH) life. Later on the meaning of Seerah further extended and used for biographies of eminent historical personalities, like Seerat-Al-Sahaba, Seerat-e-Noman etc. The contrast of Hadith and Seerah and the difference between Seerah and history is also discussed in detail.
