Abstract

The study regarding Islam and Muslim world is increasing these days in Japan. Several universities have established institutes and departments in their disciplines for this purpose. Besides studies on Islamic world, South Asia is also covered with its socio-political and cultural norms. In this respect, importance is also given to Islamic revival movements and modern Islamic thoughts by several prominent scholars and research students in their research studies and projects. Among them, Prof. So Yamane of Osaka University, and Ms. Sunaga Emiko and Sasaoki Noriko of Kyoto University's Institute of Islamic Area Studies, are quite active in studies of South Asian Islamic movements and thoughts and written research papers and articles especially on the contribution of Abul A'la Maududi and Jamat-e-Islami of Pakistan. In this article a survey is conducted what Japanese scholars have contributed in Japan in the studies particularly covering the activities and thoughts of Abul A'la Maududi in the revival of Islam in South Asia through his writings and his movement, Jamat-e-Islami in Pakistan.
